How the SSA’s Ticket to Work Program Can Help You Return to Work

Ticket to Work (TTW) is a voluntary program created to help Social Security disability beneficiaries reenter the workforce. The Social Security Administration designed the program to assist people ages 18-64 who currently receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). The program’s goal is to provide a beneficiary with the skills and connections needed to obtain meaningful work, higher earning potential and personal satisfaction through employment. Ticket to Work provides such services as:

  • Identifying employment goals
  • Making a work plan
  • Specialized training
  • Career counseling
  • Job placement
  • Vocational rehabilitation

How it works

The Ticket to Work program is completely free and voluntary. The Social Security Administration determines if a person is eligible for SSDI or SSI benefits and therefore becomes a beneficiary. They will then receive a paper Ticket in the mail with a letter explaining the Ticket to Work program. It is important to note that beneficiaries do not need to wait for the paper Ticket to contact and start in the program.

What will happen to my benefits?

Work Incentives are special considerations that make it possible for a beneficiary to consider different work options while still receiving SSDI or SSI benefits. Cash benefits will continue for a defined time period and are only stopped when the beneficiary reaches a level of income, known as Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA).

Beneficiaries will continue to receive Medicare coverage for at least eight and a half years after returning to work. Work incentives help beneficiaries manage their benefit choices, contact individualized support services, and choose part-time or work-from-home alternatives. Work incentive seminars are held across the country to help beneficiaries and their families learn more about the Ticket to Work program and job opportunities in their community. Employers and other employment support providers are invited to share information about available services and opportunities to join the workforce.
